GENESIS

Sahara Utsarga Welfare Society (SUWS) was established by a group of visionary graduates dedicated to advocating for marginalized communities. The organization’s primary mission is to enhance living standards and champion social justice by facilitating sustainable, income-generating initiatives. While developmental operations commenced in 1993, SUWS formally incorporated as a non-governmental organization in 1996 under the West Bengal Society Registration Act of 1961. In its formative years, SUWS addressed urgent public needs through diverse health and education programs. Key early milestones included providing supplemental tuition for underprivileged students, advocating for arsenic-free water access, and organizing immunization drives for Pulse Polio and Hepatitis. Additionally, the society led awareness campaigns on family planning, gender equality, and HIV prevention. By the late 1990s, the organization pivoted toward a rights-based approach, empowering communities to secure their fundamental rights to education, food security, healthcare, and housing.
SUWS has since experienced significant vertical and horizontal expansion, delivering cost-effective developmental services to economically vulnerable populations, primarily through the mobilization of Women’s Self-Help Groups (SHGs). To broaden its operational capacity, the society obtained registration under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) in 1998, enabling the acquisition of international funding for large-scale, multifaceted projects.
Throughout its journey, SUWS has maintained an unwavering commitment to operational transparency and accountability. The organization employs a rigorous oversight framework characterized by systematic reporting, periodic board reviews, and comprehensive internal audits. Furthermore, SUWS ensures strict adherence to all government directives and regulatory standards, maintaining the highest level of institutional integrity.
